This year marks the 26th annual Stonewall Pride — commemorating the 57th anniversary of the historic 1969 Stonewall Riots that sparked the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. It’s more than a party. It’s a powerful declaration that this community is here, it’s proud, and it’s not going anywhere.
A Little History Worth Knowing
The name “Stonewall” comes from the Stonewall Inn — a bar in New York City’s Greenwich Village where, in June 1969, LGBTQ+ patrons fought back against police raids in a series of spontaneous demonstrations that became a turning point in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights. Those riots, led by transgender women of color and gay patrons who had simply had enough, are widely considered the catalyst for the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement in the United States.
Today, Stonewall Pride celebrations like the one right here in Wilton Manors honor that legacy while looking forward — celebrating how far the community has come and recommitting to the work still ahead.
